Rodents

Rats and mice are among the most encountered when it comes to rodent infestation. Rodents are a very common pest in the UK due to our climate and treating infestations quickly is vital as rodents breed quickly and in large numbers. Rodent litter sizes vary from 8-12 and they can produce up to 7 litters a year. One pair of rats can lead to over 2000 in a year.

Rats can be commonly found living under buildings, in refuge heaps, and in sewers, whereas mice would generally be in more sheltered areas. Both will enter your home searching for a food source and shelter in the winter. Rodents are nocturnal and will aim to nest in areas where they will be undiscovered.

Ways to prevent rodents:

  • Keep property entrances and exits clear of clutter

  • Ensure compost heaps are away from properties

  • Ensure all food is kept in tightly sealed containers

  • Ensure all rubbish is kept away from your homes and is tightly sealed

  • Ensure bird feeding is carried out away from your home

  • Ensure all external holes are blocked off

Rodents can cause structural damage to premises and sewers by their burrowing as well as the constant gnawing on wood, cables, and pipes. Rodents also carry diseases such as salmonellosis, meningitis, and endocarditis to name a few.

With society changing rodents are becoming more commonplace in urban areas. Fast and effective treatment is essential to stop this pest problem from rapidly multiplying. At LPC, when we offer an elimination of rodents, we offer a solution tailored to meet your needs. Additionally, a separate survey can be offered where proofing is necessary after the rodent infestation has been eradicated.

Cockroaches

There are 3 main species of cockroach in the UK. In a similar way to rodents, the quantity of cockroaches in the UK has increased due to increased volumes of waste and refuse management. Cockroaches are nocturnal and utilise space in cracks and crevices to hide. They need access to moisture to survive and will eat almost any food source from cleaning products to scraps. The female lays eggs (usually between 12-50 at any one time) into an egg case which is extremely strong and hard to eliminate. Cockroaches enter the premises looking for a food supply and somewhere to breed.

Ways to prevent cockroaches

  • Keep food in tightly sealed containers

  • Ensure your home is always clean and hygienic

  • If you see a cockroach there will soon become more to ensure your infestation doesn’t get out of hand seek immediate treatment

Bedbugs

Bedbugs are an increasing problem in the UK and are particularly hard to treat. Despite common belief bed bugs aren’t just found in beds but can be found in any furniture whether it is made of wood or fabric. Bed bugs get passed through areas of high traffic sometimes through clothes, second-hand furniture, bags etc. Once in your home they generally lay dormant during the day and can potentially be in a property for up to 6 months before you may see signs of them biting you.

Common Bedbug facts:

  • Usually found anywhere in bedrooms, within any dark harbourage (not just beds), and they feed at night

  • Can survive many months without feeding (enabling them to lay dormant and unnoticed), and can only be carried into a property

  • Severe infestations can cause anemia
